Each year, at least once a year, we visit the San Diego area. You see, my husband’s sister lives just 30 minutes north of San Diego. We love the area – the weather is amazing and she only lives a couple miles from the Pacific Ocean. There are so many Marriott destinations we could visit, but since we travel so much for my husband’s work, visiting family in San Diego really is a great travel destination for us.
Have you been to the San Diego area?
What are your must see places near there?
I have been married to my husband for 14 years and one thing we have not done while visiting San Diego is go whale watching. Now that I know about how cool this is, this activity is on the top of my list of things to do while in San Diego.
The grey whale makes their annual migration from the arctic waters of the Bering Sea to the warm waters of southern California and Mexico to breed during the winter months. During the massive migration south, mothers find locations in warm, shallow bays and lagoons to birth their calves. The grey whale is the only whale to bear their young in these warm, sheltered waters. Calves and their mothers share strong bonds through the first several months of the young calf’s life.
The infographic below helps to further detail the culture of the grey whale population, their annual migration and the dangers they face.
San Diego Whale Watching in America’s Finest City – An infographic by the team at Marriott San Diego Hotels
So December through April is the peak period to view the Grey Whales migrating. I cannot wait to see them one day! After a bit of reading I found out that I could view this majestic event at the Birch Aquarium at Scripps, Cabrillo National Monument or Torrey Pines State Reserve. Or, there are also countless whale watching boating excursions that will take you close to the action (without harming the whales) and often provide a lot of great information on the whales and the San Diego area as a whole.
Would you love to visit San Deigo and see the whales migrating?
I am thinking a winter visit sounds just right next year! Plus, Marriott offers 34 hotel options in the San Diego area, and you know how much I love Marriott!
Don’t know much about Marriott? → Marriott International is a leading hospitality company with over 3,800 properties in over 74 countries and territories around the world. And yes, we will be staying with them again in January for a month! (I told you we loved them!)
I was selected for this opportunity by Clever Girls Collective, however all content and opinions expressed here are my own.

I love whales! The infographic was awesome – I didn’t know grey whales could live up to 70 years or that they learn to swim within 30 minutes after their born (although I guess they would have to!).
LaVonne says
I loved this infographic too, Emma. I think Marriott did a fantastic job putting it together. I really want to see them migrate now!

My beautiful home San Diego 😀 we are 20 mins away from the bay and I always take my kids over there, we just take the trolley ride and wander downtown including the bay. I would love to watch whale migrating someday. We heard that they have free tour but it’s first come first serve only.

Yes, you must go sometime and then come back here and tell me all about it. It is on my list for sure.
Merry Christmas!

We love San Diego, and not just because family lives there. It is beautiful and warm! It was 77 on Christmas! A great place to vacation in our own country and pretty affordable at the Marriott!

MY husband travels a LOT and he prefers staying with Marriott. I cant imagine how incredible that would be to go whale watching. I would love to take my older kids!!
LaVonne says
We prefer the Marriott too, Jenny. We actually have whale watching here in Washington too. We also see many Orcas in the Salish Sea. But, I’d still love to see the Grey Whales in San Diego!
