We made it back home from Baton Rouge this weekend. Whew! What a long travel day for us. We had a layover in Dallas for a couple hours. Thankfully, the DFW airport is very kid-friendly. But that four hour flight from Dallas with a 20 month old? MISERABLE. After the flight ended the folks around us commented on how well he did. Yes, but we had to work hard to keep him happy. After 9.5 hours of travel my husband and I were exhausted. {And we still live 1.5 hours from Sea-Tac Airport!}
We came home and honestly I just wanted to turn on the television and zone out for like hours, or maybe days. But, to save money we decided to cancel our cable television while we were gone. {Cable is expensive, isn’t it?} For years, we didn’t have cable television. But, after the birth of our second child we decided to give it a try again. And you know what? We loved it. But, we just didn’t watch it enough for what we were paying. Plus, if we are being honest, there is a lot of pretty awful stuff on TV.
So what are we doing now, you ask? We are relying on Netflix, Hulu+, and DVDs for family television and movie entertainment. I like that instead of flipping through channels {where inappropriate commercials might be showing}, we can control better what the kids are watching.

I agree there is so much garbage on television these days, we have considered cancelling our cable too. So far we haven’t done it. My husband watches more television than I do.

Besides football and news, my husband and I weren’t watching TV too much. Just the kids. And we can get their shows on Netflix and Hulu+. So it works for us. We can catch some stations without subscribing to cable too, so we can still watch PBS and local news. Thankfully.

We are on the verge of cancelling, but we are big Nascar fans & half the season is televised by TNT, which we can only get via cable. But next year the entire season will be on FOX, and that’s when we will get rid of cable. It would affect me the most because I love to watch the news & Law & Order reruns.
LaVonne says
I think that I saw Law & Order on Hulu+. My husband is a big NFL fan, but thankfully, even without paying for cable we catch local stations. So he should be okay this fall.

My one brother in a suburb of Chicago has Comcast and is not a happy customer, he told me they just raised their price again by $ 14.00 a month. And he said they take away channels all the time. My other brother in Wisconsin has Charter internet, phone, & cable all for about $ 150.00 a month and is very happy with their service too. They check with him every year if there is a better and cheaper package for him. ( Now that’s good customer service) We live in a small river town in Illinois, we switched from Medicom to Dish a year ago. We had internet & cable through them, and every Summer especially the internet would go down about 10 times a day. Very frustrating for sure. For just those two services they were charging us $150.00 a month. I had their service since 1997. I was frustrated with them, so went somewhere else. We have been really happy with Dish. Now they did raise our cable bill only $ 5.00 this year. They all raise everyone’s bill somewhat every year it seems. The day a cable company comes out with a service where you can pick out your own channel, will become rich over night!!!!!!

I would love a cable company where you can pick stations a la carte. That’d be awesome. I don’t know if it will ever happen though…
It is hard to find great affordable cable and internet service. Our internet even has issues and I get frustrated too ๐
