Did you know that Armed Forces Day is May 16th?
President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country. On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days. The single day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense.
This day is celebrated annually – the third Saturday in May.
Honor Americans who are serving in the military this year. Check your local area for activities and events to celebrate this important holiday. Activities and events can include educational activities, motorcycle rides, and parades.
One great way you can honor Americans serving in the military is by making a military care package. There are many organizations that you can contact to send care packages to our military members. Here is a printable list that you can use for ideas of what to send those who are serving our country in the military.

Great list! As a former Marine Corps Wife, I can say another great idea is to send silly things too. They get a ton of care packages with the necessities, so giving a little extra is appreciated. During my husband’s third deployment, we sent a big box full of coloring books and crayons… and those big tough Marines? They LOVED it!! Rock em sock em robots were also a hit ๐
Thank you for this post, it rocks!!
