This month our family visited Nintendo HQ again with our families. Last year our focus was the Nintedo 3DS XL, which we still play and love. This year we focused on the Nintendo Switch. Since we bought the Nintendo Switch for Nate’s 5th birthday, he was already ahead of the game. He decided, well in advance, that he’d be wearing his Mario costume to Nintendo Headquarters. When he met Mario at our breakfast, he was just a little bit excited…
About Nintendo Switch
The Nintendo Switch is a video game system that debuted in March 2017 and can be enjoyed both at home and on the go. With three ways to play:
- TV mode – where the unit rests in the Switch dock and gameplay is projected to your TV
- handheld mode – the full console experience anytime, anywhere
- tabletop mode – using the kickstand on the back of the Switch unit to prop the system up
The Switch brings thrills at home and on-the-go. The system includes on-device parental controls but parents can also download the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls App that can be used to easily and conveniently monitor and set parental controls from a smartphone.
The controllers (called Joy-Cons) allow for new play styles unique to Switch and can be used together (when attached to the Switch) or individually – each Joy-Con detaches from the side of the Switch unit so you can hold one in each hand or each player can take one. The Joy-Cons have built-in motion sensing technology; a capture button (to take screenshots of your gameplay that can be shared online); an IR Motion Camera that can detect distance, shape and motion of nearby objects; and HD Rumble to create a subtle vibration that makes some games seem more realistic.

We really love that Nintendo games are family friendly. This is a console that the whole family can enjoy together. And yes, my five year old is much better than me at all the games. But that’s okay, because we have so much playing together.

Because my son is such a big Mario fan, we already owned and love Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. But now, we will be getting more games this Christmas season for our Nintendo Switch!
