This week we read a story about a grandmother and granddaughter who were feeding the chickens. The hen just had chicks and the granddaughter could not see them under the wings. Grandma explained that the momma chick protected her little chicks under her wings when they were frightened, or when it was cold.
She then shared a Bible verse from Psalm 91 – which my Princess and I are learning this week:
He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings… Psalm 91:4 NLT
We also acted out the story of a mother hen (a blanket around my shoulders was the wings) and her chicks (my two kidoos). Daddy was feeding us then he made thunder sounds. My “little chicks” ran under my wings for protection. You have no idea how much my Princess loves pretend play like this. If we pretend we are any kind of animal – she is ecstatic. We finished our play time with the verse again.
Craft time afterwards revolved around an Easter chick. We bought construction paper at the local dollar store when we arrived in Arkansas. I love simple preschool crafts like this handprint Easter chick. I can easily help my Princess do a craft like this. {I know as she gets older she won’t want to keep it this simple so I am taking advantage of it!}
I found the idea for this handprint craft on Mrs. Ricca’s Kindergarten blog. {If you have a preschooler or kindergartner then this blog is for you!}
Here’s what you need for this craft:
- Construction paper
- Scissors
- Glue Stick
- Pens or Pencil (or googly eyes if you have those!)
I told you this was easy. We traced my Princess’ hand and then she cut them out of the yellow paper. We also cut out an egg shaped body, a triangle in orange for the beak, and little orange T shaped legs.
She likes the gluing part the best.
When it was finished she brought it in the living room to us and said, “Ta Da!” It was a quick and easy raining afternoon craft idea that goes well with Psalm 91:4.
How has Spring been going in your neck of the woods?
