What is Self-Love?
When I was younger I don’t remember the term “self-love” do you? I do remember self-esteem and self-worth, but the idea of loving oneself seemed foreign at a younger age. Do you love yourself?
Merriam Webster says that self-love is:
- an appreciation of one’s own worth or virtue
- proper regard for and attention to one’s own happiness or well-being
Ephesians 5:29 says, “For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church.”
Jesus also tells us in the gospel of Matthew, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
I am not talking about conceitedness or narcissism, but a love of one’s self that is healthy and divine. It’s easy to beat up on ourselves in this culture, to measure up against others, and find oneself lacking. But not only is it unhealthy, but it is also unbiblical. In fact, the Psalmist tells us, “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.”
