You have done everything possible to ensure that your children are happy and healthy. You’ve made sure that they have the proper nutrition and exercise, that they get enough sleep, and that they have learned to foster healthy habits.
Now that you have devoted so much to their health, it’s time to also think about their safety and the safety of your home. Even if you live in a tight knit and overall safe neighborhood where you know all of your neighbors, it can’t hurt to take security measures around your home. A home security system can protect your home and family, and give you the peace of mind you need.
Do you have a home security system?
Because we travel so often, we’ve thought about getting one ourselves.
Home Security Options
The type of alarm system you choose will depend largely on your type of dwelling. If you own your home, you can install a wired home security system. If you are renting, or if you don’t have access to your home’s electrical wiring, you can install a wireless home security system.
The Wired Home Security System
The wired home security system is powered by your home’s electrical system and may connect to your home telephone system as well. A wired system could also have a battery backup in the event of a power outage.
You can have a basic system that sounds an alarm, which can be heard by neighboring houses, when an intruder enters the home; or you can have a more advanced system that sounds an alarm and relays a signal to a remote monitoring station. You can also have a wired system that monitors your basement for leaks, monitors carbon monoxide, has smoke and fire detectors, and even controls the lights, thermostat, and appliances in your home. You can also download an app that lets you remote control your alarm system, other functions, from your smart phone or tablet.
Wired systems are considered permanent, which means if you sell or rent out your home, you can’t take it with you. Because the wired system uses the house electric, you may need to have it professionally installed. However, there are some units that you can install yourself, if you are comfortable working with your house electric.
The Wireless Home Security System
A wireless home security system is usually powered by an internal battery instead of connecting to your home’s electricity. The wireless system has essentially the same functions as a wired system, except that it is not permanently wired to your home. You can take the system with you when you move, which makes them ideal for renters.
Where to Find a System
There are several places where you can buy a home security system. Providers like ADT, which have been in the business for decades, offer alarm systems online and through select retailers, like Best Buy. Cable companies, like Time Warner, offer home security options either as stand-alone services, or as part of a cable, Internet, or phone subscription. Some telephone companies also offer home security systems, either stand-alone, or as part of a phone subscription. You can also find home security systems at home improvement stores. The home improvement store could have an installation service, or you might have to self-install.
Regardless of the type of system you choose, it’s vital to protect your family and home. We will go to great lengths to ensure our loved ones are taken care of and ensuring safety at home should be the first start. Investing in a reliable home security system is protection for you your future; a future that is priceless.
