If you’ve booked a photography session for your child, you want to make sure the results are world class. A big part of this is how to dress your child for the photo shoot. Of course, some of this depends on what you want from the images, but there are some general tips that can be helpful.
If you’ve hired a professional, (like Meredith Zinner Photography), they will be able to advise you on clothing if you’re concerned. Take a look at some of the advice sourced from child photographers around the globe.
Less is More
Your child may have a favorite super hero or cartoon character that’s emblazoned on certain items of clothing. Although these items may look cute they’re not ideal for a photography session. You want the central focus of the images to be your child. This isn’t going to happen if the Minions are proudly displayed across their chest. The same thing applies to logos and large patterns which can catch the eye.
Many parents choose white when deciding on photo shoot clothes for their child. It’s crisp and clean and doesn’t draw the focus away from the subject. For girls, pastels are always a safe option, as is khaki for boys.
Casual or Formal?
There is no right or wrong when it comes to deciding whether to dress your child in a formal manner, or more casually. The decision really depends of what you want from the final images. If you want a reflection of how your child is each day, then casual clothing works well, and is usually a comfortable option for your child.
On the other hand, photography sessions can be a great opportunity for you to capture your child a little differently. Adult style clothing, such as a suit, can look cute if done correctly. Dressing your child more formally creates a one off photograph that is completely different to any other images you may have of them.
Remember to Complement
You don’t have to match the colors that your child wears, but it’s a good idea to make sure they complement each other. Color clashes can draw focus away from the image of your child.
It’s also worth remembering that if you have more than one child, their style of dress should be standard. It will look odd if you have one child dressed in a casual manner while the other is dressed in a formal suit.
The Baby Birthday Suit
If your child is still a baby, then often the best choice is for them to wear nothing at all. Professional photographers know the best angles to use to create natural and adorable images.
These are just some of the tips you may want to take into account when you’re dressing your child for a photography session. Of course, there are always exceptions, and if you have a piece of clothing which you want your child to wear, but you’re not sure if it’s appropriate, it’s always a good idea to ask the photographer for their opinion.
