Our family loves fun mocktail recipes. With the New Year upon us, and Dry January* coming up – I think it’s great to share a few fun recipes. The first three are from a new book, The I Love Trader Joe’s Cocktail Book, which has mocktails in it as well.

Dirty Ginger (Mocktail)
Warm your senses with this mocktail, an invigorating blend of chai spices, heavy cream, and bold espresso. Inspired by the traditional Indian flavored tea beverage known as masala chai, this drink is a cool refresher while adding spice to your autumnal Gatherings.
2 pieces Trader Joe’s Crystallized Candied Ginger, divided
2 ounces Trader Joe’s Spiced Chai Black Tea Concentrate
1/2 ounce brewed and chilled Trader Joe’s Shade Grown Espresso Blend
1 ounce heavy cream
YIELD: 1 drink
1. Cut 1 piece of the candied ginger roughly and add it to a shaker. Add the chai concentrate, and crush with a muddler or wooden spoon for 30 seconds.
2. Fill three-quarters full with ice and add the espresso and heavy cream. Shake for 15 to 25 seconds.
3. Strain into a coupe glass and lay thin strips of the remaining piece of candied ginger over the rim of the glass.
Smoky Ghosty (Mocktail)
Mocktails often can be simple and sweet. Not this drink! The combination of sweet mango, bitter coffee, and spicy smoked ghost pepper really makes for a complex cocktail that will unfold itself to you as you enjoy it. The fiery pepper may sound intense, but when used sparingly and tamed with the mango and heavy cream, the drink is perfectly balanced.
1/4 cup frozen Trader Joe’s Mango Chunks
1/4 cup Trader Joe’s 100% Mango Juice
1/8 teaspoon kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
1/4 cup heavy cream
2 tablespoons dark brown sugar
1/8 teaspoon Trader Joe’s Smoked Ghost Chilies
1/4 cup brewed and chilled Joe Medium Roast Ground Coffee
YIELD: 1 drink
1. In a blender, combine the frozen mango chunks, juice, salt, and cardamom. Blend until smooth.
2. Whisk together the heavy cream, brown sugar, and smoked ghost pepper powder until soft peaks form.
3. Assemble the drink in a rocks glass. Pour the mango mixture into the bottom of the glass, add the chilled coffee, and top with the peppery whipped cream.
Gooseberry Starfruit Refresher (Mocktail)
Two underutilized fruits are the star players in the winter months at Trader Joe’s. This two-ingredient spritz marries gooseberries, which look like golden orbs of sunshine and taste like tangy grapes, and starfruit, a beautiful fruit with a delicate sweet-and-sour flavor.
6 Trader Joe’s Cape Gooseberries
1 (12-ounce) can Trader Joe’s Starfruit Sparkling Water
YIELD: 1 drink
1. In the bottom of a Collins glass, add 6 gooseberries and crush them with a muddler or wooden spoon to release their juices.
2. Fill the glass with ice and top with the sparkling water.
*The Benefits of Dry January for Christian Families
As the New Year begins, many families are embracing “Dry January,” a month-long commitment to abstain from alcohol. For Christian families, this practice can be a meaningful opportunity to align with biblical principles of self-discipline, health, and spiritual renewal. Here’s why participating in Dry January can be a blessing for your family’s lifestyle and faith journey.
1. Fostering Self-Control
The Bible often highlights the importance of self-control, a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). Choosing to abstain from alcohol for a month is a tangible way to practice this discipline. By committing to Dry January, families can encourage one another to rely on God’s strength to maintain their resolve, creating an environment where self-control is celebrated and reinforced.
2. Strengthening Family Bonds
When families undertake a challenge together, it fosters unity and shared purpose. Dry January provides an opportunity for parents and children to discuss healthy habits and biblical teachings on moderation and stewardship of the body. This can lead to open, meaningful conversations about the role of substances in life and the value of making intentional choices that honor God.
3. Supporting Physical and Mental Health
Abstaining from alcohol, even temporarily, offers numerous health benefits. It can improve sleep quality, boost energy levels, and enhance mental clarity. For parents, this increased vitality can better equip them to serve their family and community. For teens observing this example, it reinforces the importance of taking care of their bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).
4. Reflecting on Spiritual Growth
Dry January can also serve as a time of spiritual renewal. Families can replace alcohol-related habits with moments of prayer, scripture reading, or worship. This not only deepens individual relationships with Christ but also cultivates a spiritually rich home atmosphere.
5. Inspiring Generosity
The money saved from not purchasing alcohol can be redirected to support a family mission, donate to a church or charity, or invest in quality time together. This shift aligns with the Christian call to stewardship and generosity, reminding families to prioritize eternal values over temporary pleasures.
Dry January isn’t just about abstaining from something; it’s about embracing a season of intentional living. By participating, Christian families can draw closer to each other and God, starting the New Year with clarity, purpose, and joy.
