Let Your Puppy Out Frequently
Schedule permitting, it’s best to let your puppy out at least once every two hours or so. Potty training takes commitment on your part. That being said, consider training during your vacation or when you’ll be home for extended periods of time.
Pick One “Bathroom Spot”
Before you start training your puppy, pick one specific “bathroom spot” and stick to it. Whenever possible, take the dog to that spot on his leash. Go one step further by using a phrase to remind the puppy what to do. It won’t be long before he understands what you’re talking about.
Reward Your Puppy
Every time your puppy successfully uses the bathroom outside, reward him with a treat. Always do this immediately after going back inside. This helps to teach your new family member what’s expected of him, just like the phrase mentioned above.
Use a Crate
Let’s face it; chances are you won’t be able to supervise your puppy all the time during the potty training process. For situations like this, it’s recommended that you crate the dog. Make him a cozy spot to lie down and give him a couple of toys to occupy himself will you’re away. Puppies don’t want to go potty in small, confined areas.
Avoid Punishment
Accidents are bound to happen. There’s absolutely no way to totally avoid them. Never scold your puppy or, worse yet, rub his nose in the soiled area. This is a scare tactic that always causes more harm than good. You don’t want your puppy to be afraid of going to the bathroom.
