Growing up on the Swinomish reservation in Skagit County, life was greatly impacted by salmon fishing. The Skagit River is the only river in the lower 48 states that has all five species of salmon and provides the best salmon fishing experience. Commercial salmon fishing was my dad’s only job the first twelve years of my life. I remember going out on my dad’s fishing boats as a young girl, hoping to not get sea sick, loving the fresh air, and desperately wanting to get dropped off on some amazing sand bar that only showed up during low tide. Swimming and building sand castles where no one else was felt special and thrilling. The excited feeling of salmon bobbing in the net before pulling the net in the boat. These are special memories of my childhood with my dad.
Thirty years later, my own kids love going out on the fishing boat with my dad, their Papa. They love to catch salmon, eat fishing boat treats, and find sandbars to run and play on. It’s fun to watch the joy in their eyes, because I felt that joy when I was a child too.
Fishing for Salmon
Last week the first salmon fishing season of the year arrived. The mighty and amazing King Salmon were running in the Skagit River. Our Tribe celebrated the First Salmon Ceremony. My dad went out fishing and my 85 year old grandfather also went out fishing. They’re going out again this week, and we cannot wait. The temperatures here in Skagit County are going to be in the mid-70s and we want to go out on the water with my dad, enjoy the sand bars, treats, and the excitement of seeing salmon being caught.
Because, we’re from the Swinomish tribe, we are literally Salmon People, for centuries. Salmon is important to our culture. Salmon is life. I am happy that I got to honor my dad this past week after our first salmon fishing opener. I gifted him the BEST gift. Something I knew he’d love and use. A new vacuum sealer: the FoodSaver® GameSaver® Big Game™ Vacuum Sealing System. He has an older model and to get this new GameSaver® is exactly the kind of gift he wants but will use often.
FoodSaver® GameSaver®
A big part of salmon fishing is being able to put salmon fillets in the freezer for the rest of the year. Whenever we have family dinners: 4th of July, grandpa’s birthday, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc., we pull out the salmon and cook it to share with the entire family.
The Big Game™ prolongs the freshness of the salmon. In fact, it keeps the fish fresh 5x longer and prevents freezer burn. It also performs better than his older model: up to 80 consecutive seals or 240 pounds!
What I think is amazing is the Big Game™ can be taken on the boat and used on-the-go. It has a rugged carry handle and 12 Volt DC Adaptor. This model works with all the bags and Vacuum Heat-Seal Rolls he currently has too. Which is a BIG plus!
