In January, my Princess made a toilet paper craft at church – a butterfly that you could place a secret message in. She wanted to make it again for our craft time this last week. So we decided to turn it into a handprint butterfly craft.
We have been saving our empty toilet paper rolls for craft time. I pulled out her construction paper, tape, glue scissors and markers and we made a simple handprint craft.
She carefully rolled her black construction paper around the toilet paper roll and neatly trimmed the edges. I was really impressed. I knew she was a bit of a perfectionist already, but her ability to get it “just right” still astounded me.
It was her idea to add the pipe cleaner and cotton puffs as well.
Now that she is 5 there a a good handful of words she can now spell. It is cute to see her still occasionally writing her Rs goofy. She loves using many pens to make a card beautiful.
Once the “secret message” is finished, you roll the paper in it and “hide” it inside the butterfly’s body.
It turned out so cute. We had fun making this together. She wants to make more toilet paper crafts now. (Off to Pinterest we go for some good ideas!)
If you like this craft you might also like our Handprint Flower Pot which would also make a cute Mother’s Day card:

This is a great craft to reuse those toilet paper rolls, my kids would love to make these for grandma, awesome that the message is hidden inside. Very cute!

Well, aside from the fact that these “hand-crafted” butterflies are utterly adorable and I’m in complete support of any activity that involves recycling or puts what would otherwise would be tossed (ultimately) into a landfill or some precious body of water ~ putting it to some good creative use!
But it happens that just this weekend we were with some friends with the TV on it the background when we heard something (not sure if it was an ad or some “news” show filler about some new toilet paper that has NO cardboard roll in the center ~ so no waste ~ which led us into a conversation about what DOES happen to all those toilet paper rolls and what are some potential good use for them.
WHile we all agreed that they must be useful for some various kinds of crafts ~ we all came up short on ideas ~ but yours – your’s is WONDER-FULL ~ really so sweet. I’, sharing it everywhere I can think of. Thanks!

Jesselyn, I have seen those no cardboard roll TPs on the market. I haven’t used them yet. But my kids love to save our cardboard rolls for crafts like this. We have fun! Thanks for coming by to comment and the sharing. You are awesome!

I’m not crafty by any means but my daughter who is 4 has autism and absolutely loves arts and crafts, her OT says that its because of the sensory stimulation she gets from it! Won’t she be surprised when I tell her we are going to make a butterfly! This is something reasonably easy enough for me to help her do and we have all the supplies already! I’d love to see more ideas like these Thanks!
